You put out online content on a regular basis and you try to optimize it as much as you can.

You start writing your website or blog content to optimize a keyword, you target posts for specific audiences, and you optimize your images for various Social Media platforms. There is a lot of stuff you have to do so your online content is optimized for search engines, social networks and of course, your audience.

There are so many tools and options out there that many business owners when it comes to online content they tend to over-optimize it. Having a lot of options and possibilities to improve is a good thing but too much optimization is bad.

Writing blog posts is a great way to drive traffic to your website. You know what’s not? Over-optimizing those posts by using your targeted keyword in every phrase. This makes it annoying for readers and can also hurt your SEO. You should keep a SEO keyword ratio useful for the reader.

Writing for search engines and not for readers.

Yes, you should optimize your content for search engines but what about your readers? When you write your blog posts don’t over-optimize online content for SEO but write in an easy-to-understand tone while providing useful information.

If you’re a small business with a local audience, over-optimizing your content for search engines and not writing to your local targeted customers is another mistake business owners make. Don’t put all your efforts into keyword optimization, also look out for local SEO because people will look for your contact information, opening hours and reviews.

Rushing for Links.

A few years ago, the more links you had pointing to your website, the better. Sadly, some SEO people still throw a lot of money in getting a big quantity of links.

If you ask anyone in the SEO field, it’s not the quantity of the links that matters the most but the quality. I would even go further and add another factor to this equation – relevance. Google has been giving out strong signals about how important relevant links really are, and you should trust them.

Do you really need all those tags?

Some people tend to exagerate when it comes to hashtags on social networks. If there was only one network where that would be acceptable, that’s Instagram but even there, there is an optimal number of hashtags to use. You don’t need 5-10 hashtags for your Twitter or Facebook posts, just add one or two.

Replying in every conversation.

I really enjoy it when people behind the brand come and reply to comments on their Facebook pages, but I don’t see how replying to each and every comment will make a difference.

You’ll just come out as being needy and wanting attention from your fans. Choose the best discussions you can have on your social network posts and reply there.

Jumping on other people’s trends or hashtags.

You want to get heard but don’t step out of your niche. If you see a trending topic on ski masks but you sell donuts, maybe hold off the press. Like I said before, you want to be active in social media discussions but you don’t want to come out as being needy.

When done right, content makes the difference between businesses but when you’re trying too hard to get ahead, it can hurt your project. There is a sweet spot you will need to find and apply it to your online content and social media marketing tactics.

Don’t over-optimize online content. It may do your more harm than good.
